This is a painting by the French symbolist painter Gustav Moreau. I saw it when I went to the Moreau museum in Paris. To me, this painting is a work of art because of the new interpretation it brings to a familiar story, the story of Prometheus. The painting shows an eagle eating his liver as he sits imprisoned on a hill. The artist portrays Prometheus looking stoically in the distance and litters the rest of the painting with obscure symbols. Though I do not know what the artist's intention was in putting in every detail (and, the question can be raised if the intention even matters), to me, the level of detail and the way in which he portrays this familiar story makes this painting a work of art. He is clearly saying something about human nature.
